It’s no secret that thePokemon GOmobile game has been a huge hit for developer Niantic and The Pokemon Company, so much so that many are attempting to replicate its success. Even Niantic itself is trying totake thePokemon GOformula and apply it to Harry Potterin the hopes of gaining even more players to its games. But while Niantic may have the market cornered on augmented reality mobile games, a new challenger is seemingly entering the arena inMinecraft.
Although nothing is confirmed, Microsoft recently released a teaser for something involvingMinecraftand augmented reality that will be officially revealed on May 17th in celebration ofMinecraft’s 10th anniversary. In the teaser trailer, Minecraft director Saxs Persson is seen playing with something on his phone, before putting it down, getting distracted, and then picking up the wrong phone as he leaves. Then, a woman sitting next to him picks up Persson’s phone and sees an augmented reality experience involvingMinecraft.
While not exactly likePokemon GO, theMinecraftAR mobile game does show a pig walking onMinecraft-textured ground that is superimposed on the concrete sidewalk. There is also a menu with a few tools and materials available, like a sword and a block.
It’s unclear how exactly thisMinecraftmobile game will work or whether or not itfunctions likePokemon GO, where players must walk around their town searching for Pokemon. Perhaps it is a way for players to create smallMinecraftworlds in augmented reality, or maybe the interaction is more involved than that. If it is likePokemon GO, maybe the game puts specific structures out in the world and asks players to go out and interact with them.
Whatever thisMinecraftgame may be, it won’t be long before fans learn all of the details. As mentioned, the trailer concludes with the promise of a full reveal of theMinecraftmobile gameon May 17th as part of the game’s 10-year anniversary.
