Includes SPOILERS for The Wheel of Time season 3 finale and spoilers from the book series.

The Wheel of Timealready seems to have set up the two main villains for season 4, and Mat might be the greatest weapon for the Light. Out of all theWheel of Timecharacters' stories to predict for season 4, Mat is the most challenging to pin down. He’s consistently deviated from his book counterpart, especially in season 3, with him traveling to Tanchico instead of the Aiel Waste, putting him on a curious path going forward.

InThe Wheel of Timeseason 3’s ending,Mat traveled through a redstone gateway, where he was met by an extradimensional being known as an Eelfinn. This is one of Mat’s most pivotal moments in the book series, though it happens in Rhuidean inThe Shadow Rising, with Mat hanging from Avendesora. TheEelfinn grants him three wishes: to be rid of Aes Sedai and the One Power, to clear his added memories from the Horn of Valere, and to leave the Eelfinn’s dimension.

Compulsion Won’t Work On Mat In The Wheel Of Time Season 4

The Forsaken Can’t Use This Powerful Ability On Mat

TheEelfinn bestowed upon Mat a silver foxhead medallion, which possesses powerful magical properties, answering his wish to be protected from the One Power. While wearing this medallion, the power of Compulsion won’t work on him, giving him a significant advantage that his friends won’t have. We saw Moghedien use Compulsion on Nynaeve and Elayne inThe Wheel of Timeseason 3, episode 6, so the TV series has already begun demonstrating its potential.

The Forsaken Rahvin was also introduced earlier this season, disguised as Lord Gaebriel, a companion to Queen Morgase Trakand. Rahvin is also proficient in using Compulsion, and given the directionThe Wheel of Timeseason 3 took,Rahvin and Moghedien should be the primary antagonists for season 4. Season 4 will primarily coverThe Fires of Heaven, meaning the heroes will be split in pursuit of the two aforementioned Forsaken. Mat’s medallion will make him crucial to have in this storyline.

We don’t know preciselywhich book season 4 will adapt, so it’s hard to pin down what Mat’s next story will be. However, because of the foxhead medallion, it makes sense to assume he’ll be fighting one of these two Forsaken.Rahvin is the more likely candidate, since Mat is closely tied to that storylinein the books. Also, Moghedien is more of Nynaeve’s nemesis. This could mean Mat and Rand reuniting and spending much ofThe Wheel of Timeseason 4 together, dealing with the Forsaken in Caemlyn.
