Stuck not knowing which tank to play in Season 1? Here are the best performing specs in M+.
Season 1 of The War Within has begun, and we are starting to see what specs people are bringing to M+ to help craft the current season’s meta. We have compiled this tier list based on what tanks we are seeing in the top M+ runs.
Please note, just like thehealerandDPSlists, this is not final, and will change throughout the season based on dungeon hot-fixes, class changes, gear scaling, etc.
Remember that at the end of the day, gear and skill matter more than just bringing the top spec. As many of us have seen, a great player on a B-Tier spec will always outperform a subpar player on an S-Tier spec.
S-Tier M+ Tanks in Season 1
The most significant thing we notice when looking at tanks currently occupying the S-Tier ranking is the return of the mighty Prot Warrior! Their increased damage profile alone is one of the many reasons they have returned to the spotlight.
As well, their Mountain Thane hero tree providing them with more personal defensive talents. like Keep Your Feet on the Ground. as well as the reduction you get to the cooldown to Shield Wall.
A-Tier M+ Tanks in Season 1
Blood Death Knights are one of the strongest M+ tanks in the hands of the right player. Their ability to keep themselves alive is one of their biggest strengths.
The problem with BDK’s though is how unforgiving they can be when you make a mistake in your cooldown rotation. you may easily trigger a Purgatory proc that you would much rather have available later in the fight.

B-Tier M+ Tanks in Season 1
Brewmaster got a very nice rework going into The War Within. This addressed a lot of the button bloat that plagued the spec for so long.
Losing Bonedust Brew and having to use Spinning Crane Kick far less makes the spec feel less clunky overall. Their only downfall, and why you see so few in the rankings, are their lack of self healing, making people less likely to choose it against options like Blood or Prot Paladin.
C-Tier M+ Tanks in Season 1
As someone who has been a huge fan of Prot Paladin for years, seeing how hard The War Within hit them really broke my heart. Word of Glory is the lowest it’s ever been.
Eye of Tyr and Sentinel had their duration reduced. They do shine in one place though! Paladins still bring more utility than any other tank thanks to Blessing of Protection, Blessing of Spellwarding, Lay on Hands, and Blessing Sacrifice.
