If you’re looking for some silver lining out of the litany of unfortunate cancellations and layoffs that have been rocking the games industry, listen up if you’re aFalloutfan.
One of these many unfortunate stories of late was the cancellation of a new MMO by Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax Media, but the reallocation of funds from that project’s ashes means thatFallout 5is now “fully greenlit” for development.

In a new episode of theXbox Two Podcast, Windows Central editor and industry insider Jez Corden says “Falloutin general” is “where they’ve decided to make the investments and where the money will be translating to a surefire win,” compared to an assumed gamble that was the canceled MMO.
This means thatFallout 5, along with “full steam ahead” development onElder Scrolls VIandStarfieldDLC, are next on the docket for Bethesda over the next few years, according to Corden. When any of these projects will come to fruition is another question entirely, and Corden’s report is not much to go on, regardless, but this can be perceived as a positive in a sea of negative news surrounding games right now, especially Xbox.

Corden opined that a new studio could be spun up out of the organizational changes specifically forFallout’sdevelopment, but he claimed that was also just conjecture.
Fallout 4’s10th anniversary is coming up later this year, andFallout 76is turning seven years old in the fall, so a new mainline entry in the franchise has been a long time coming. And still, with a few other projects in the works, it may be several more years away from ever even seeing the light of day.

Fallouthas had a big resurgence in recent years, especially thanks to the Amazon Prime Video series and turnaround ofFallout 76, so Bethesda attempting to capitalize on that hype by turning its attention back to the post-apocalyptic franchise seems like a no-brainer.
For now, take this as a modicum of positivity to come out of amassively unfortunate situation, but also don’t hold your breath about getting any new information or confirmation aboutFallout 5for the next couple years.
