Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Buccaneers season 2.Leighton Meester recently addressed her new role inThe Buccaneersseason 2 and the shocking revelation about Nan St. George’s (Kristine Frøseth) family that went along with it. There was a bigrevelation about Nan’s family inThe Buccaneersseason 1: Patti (Christina Hendricks) isn’t her biological mother. Nan’s father, Tracy (Adam James), was unfaithful to his wife, and Nan was born out of wedlock. The ending of the season, however, set upThe Buccaneersseason 2to introduce Nan’s biological mother. Now, the premiere has already introduced her to thecast ofThe Buccaneersalong with a shocking twist.
While speaking withEntertainment Weekly,Leighton Meester spoke about her new character inThe Buccaneersseason 2, Nell, and the fact that she’s Nan’s biological mother and Patti’s sister.

“That element of the secret is so deep and dark. It wasn’t just that Nan was born out of wedlock. It’s that there was this horrible, hurtful betrayal, and that’s been shrouded in secrecy all these years, too.
“Nell came not totally with a plan, but knowing that now this information is out there. Nan is illegitimate, and that shameful thing she’s been holding onto for so long is maybe not worth holding onto. But Nell finds out that more secrets have been kept that have made the original secret not as bad. She finds out that her being Nan’s mother may not even be the worst part.”

As Meester explained,Nell’s relationship to Nan is going to be a major source of drama and conflict inThe Buccaneersseason 2. Patti is trying desperately to hide her lie from Nan, but Nell wants to connect with her biological daughter after years of hiding from her. It’s also clear from Meester’s comments that she deeply understands all the complicated relationships and family dynamics inThe Buccaneersseason 2, and that she’s keenly aware of how important this revelation is to the show and its characters.
What Leighton Meester’s Role As Nan’s Biological Mother Means For The Buccaneers Season 2
Meester’s Nell Will Add Even More Drama To The St. George Family In The Buccaneers Season 2
To put it simply,Nell’s revelation that she’s Nan’s biological mother changes almost everything inThe Buccaneersseason 2. Nan and Patti had barely gotten over the revelation that she was illegitimate, and the knowledge that her aunt is actually her mother may be enough to ostracize Nan from Patti. That’s especially bad news for Patti, who wanted to divorce Tracy inThe Buccaneersseason 1 but needed Nan’s help as the Duchess of Tintagel. Patti’s only hope of getting her life back and keeping her daughter in it is to lie, which will likely only make the revelation worse once Nan finds out.
Nell’s arrival at Nan’s wedding also adds a new layer of drama toThe Buccaneersseason 2. Nan already has enough to worry about with Guy (Matthew Broome) and Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) being on the run, the Dowager Duchess (Amelia Bullmore) staring daggers at her, and her marriage to Theo (Guy Remmers) while she’s still in love with Guy.Having to deal with the secret of her parentage yet again will only give Nan even more stress inThe Buccaneersseason 2and add even more complex webs into the story.
Our Take On Leighton Meester’s Nell In The Buccaneers Season 2
I Wasn’t Expecting Nell To Be Nan’s Aunt, But The Twist Paints A Great Picture Of The Buccaneers Season 2
I honestly was not expecting Nan’s secret biological mother to be her aunt, but I was very pleasantly surprised.Nell’s relationship to Patti adds so much intrigue and suspense toThe Buccaneersseason 2 that I think it was the perfect decision to make them sisters. I can’t wait to see how Patti tries to handle this situation and what Nan will do once she inevitably finds out, and I also can’t wait to see how Nell dances around the issue in the meantime. It’s also great that Leighton Meester was picked for this role, as Nell is already panning out to be a character she can really sink her teeth into.

Leighton Meester’s Nell is an exceptional sign for the rest ofThe Buccaneersseason 2.If the show can already up the stakes and drama from season 1 just in the premiere, I’m optimistic about what the rest ofThe Buccaneershas in store. There are so many directions it can take with Nell and all of Nan’s other worries, and this twist is just proof that fans of the show can trust the writers to make the right decisions. If the rest of the season can turn out as well as the revelation about Nan’s mother did, thenThe Buccaneerscould easily be one of the best shows on Apple TV+.
