As theSpider-Manfilm franchise has seen three incarnations (four for those that count theanimatedInto the Spider-Verse)it has seen as many actors and actresses fill such roles as Peter Parker, Aunt May, and Flash Thompson. One role that has only been filled once is that of J. Jonah Jameson, the perpetually disgruntled head of the Daily Bugle, by actor J.K. Simmons.
During an interview with PeopleTV, Simmons recalled having to do an “old-school” camera test to first land the role for2002’sSpider-Manfrom director Sam Raimi. Simmons recalled the experience being, “very nerve-wracking,” especially when he had to pretend to be, “lifted by the neck and choked" by the Green Goblin.

The second version ofSpider-Man,The Amazing Spider-Manstarring Andrew Garfield as the webslinger, did not feature any actor portraying J. Jonah Jameson, opting only to mention his name in an onscreen email to Peter Parker. This incarnation was cut short, however, despite the many seeds it tried to lay for a sequel, where an actor could have filled the role.
Thankfully though, J.K. Simmons was cast as Jameson once again for the third and now current version ofSpider-Man, starring Tom Holland. During the PeopleTV interview, Simmons was asked if fans could expect to see him again beyond his post-credits scene cameo inSpider-Man: Far From Home,to which he replied,“I don’t know if I would use the wordexpect.” Simmons goes on to explain that he is contractually obligated to appear, but only if optioned by Sony or Marvel. He ends the topic by saying, “It’s great to have the opportunity, as these things evolve, to be one of the holdovers from the previous version.”
Fans will have to wait to find out if J.K. Simmons will don the little mustache as J. Jonah Jameson again when the third Tom Holland Spider-manpremieres in the fall of 2021.
