There are few superheroes with relationships as secure asSupermanand Lois Lane - no matter what the version of their story, the smalltown superhuman and big-city journalist find their way together. Which is why it’s so shocking that DC just broke up Clark Kent and Lois Lane, with a heartbreaking twist in the tale.

Superman’s Time-Vision Makes for a Heartbreaking Break-Up
InSuperman: The Kryptonite Spectrum #1- from W. Maxwell Prince, Martín Morazzo, Chris O’Halloran and Good Old Neon - Superman discovers four new types of Kryptonite and begins experimenting with their effects on his powers. Exposed to Purple Kryptonite,Superman begins experiencing non-linear time. As he attempts to figure out this new power, he has visions of a future dinner with Lois, where she ends their relationship.
Lois explains that she’s getting older and wants to have children, and she doesn’t believe she and Clark are similar enough to make their relationship work. However, as Superman prepares for the dinner and to try and win over the love of his life,Batman drops a bombshell: their dinner took place the night before, and the two already broke up.

It’s a brilliantly twisted way to use Superman’s experience of non-linear time, setting up a potential problem that it turns out is already set in stone. The break-up is especially cruel because Lois suggests Superman needs to be with"Someone more like you"- a relatively impossible task for someone who is the last member of their species.

Is His Controversial Wonder Woman Romance Back?
Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrumis published under DC’s Black Label imprint, and so likely takes place in its own separate continuity. Despite this, it’s shocking to see the usually inseparable Superman and Lois Lane suffer such a mundane, believable break-up.
Lois' comments hint that this reality might bring backSuperman and Wonder Woman’s controversial relationshipfrom 2011’s New 52 reboot, especially because Diana is due to join the story in the next issue. However, most fans will be hoping that Superman’s experiences with Kryptonite bring him and Lois back together, especially as each new version produces an extreme response from his body.

Jon Kent’s Arrival Is the Big Difference Between Universes
In this comic, Lois cites wanting to have children as the reason she and Clark need to break up. In DC’s mainstream continuity, the two actually already had a son, Jon Kent, who is half-human/half-Kryptonian, and stronger due to his unique genetic make-up. This offers hope thatThe Kryptonite Spectrum’s Lois and Clark can likewise have a child, and suggests Jon kept them together in the mainstream.
Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrumis wowing fans with its truly unexpected new powers, but perhaps the biggest surprise is Superman’s ‘time vision’ ending his relationship to Lois Lane in a surprising and tragic way - here’s hoping the two come back together as this truly unique series continues.
