An extract from Empire ’s Gremlins reunion is up on the magazine ’s website , and it includes the tale about how they first try out using a imp dressed as a Mogwai before settle on puppets . There was a lot of crap involved .
The whole clause is in this week ’s cartridge clip , but here ’s the bit about project the creatures :
Chris Walas : I pulled out the first draft the other day and read it . And I have no idea how I could be so unintelligent as to put to that project , I ’d written one word on the front cover : “ hour angle ! ” I did n’t believe it could be done . The applied science did n’t exist . I did n’t have a shop or a crew . But I was desperate for money .

Joe Dante : Chris and I had worked together since Piranha , and we were design a 3D remaking of animate being From The Black Lagoon . Then Gremlins came along . It was a salutary job , but there just was n’t a wad of budget . All these creatures had to be created and we had no mind how we were go to do it .
Walas : Were n’t you thinking about monkeys ?
Dante : First we talk about stop - motion . Then realize we ’d still be shooting if we did that . And at one point someone — I hope it was n’t me — suggested we try monkeys in Gremlin suit .

Rick Baker : Hey , it worked in ( Laurel and intrepid movie ) Babes In Toyland .
Dante : But that one just had a Mickey Mouse head on . We actually did get a monkey and put a head on him and watch him wobble around the redaction elbow room , pooping on everything in holy terror . We decided it was n’t really going to process out .
