Kazuo Ishiguro ’s Never Let Me Go is one of the most acclaimed novels of the past decennary . But how does the unexampled movie view as up ? other reviews are divided , some praising the movie ’s subtlety , others calling it soulless and boring .
Oh , and here ’s a spoiler admonition . There are some comparatively minor spoilers below , and the review we ’re linking to are chock full of raider .
So the adaptation of the Booker Prize - shortlisted novel has played at a duo of plastic film festivals now , and it open up this week in a few places . It ’s open a bit wider on Sept. 24 , and will go nationwide on Oct. 8 . After reading through a bushel of revue that come out over the weekend , I ’d say the reception is jolly divided , with negative reviews somewhat preponderate overconfident one . But both the lovers and the haters seem to agree that it ’s a low-keyed , muted motion-picture show that pare down the novel to a underframe of the plot and swear on some articulation - overs to get across some central ideas .
In the interests of being overnice , we ’ll start with the six good reappraisal and then move on to the nine negative / mixed ones :
Variety is probably the most enthusiastic , saying :
Never Let Me Go is that rare breakthrough , a slight little four - leaf trefoil of a movie that ’s emotionally withering , yet all too easily trampled by cynics . Every cautiously opt gesture , penning and note in this tragic dear story seems engineered to wring tear as director Mark Romanek ( One Hour Photo ) gradually pull back to reveal the full scope of his challenging thought experiment … Though technically a scientific discipline - fiction story , Never allow Me Go plays more like a polite prim romance , all repressed feelings and unanswered yearning . Still , conceived in the spirit of such future - given allegory as child of Men and Fahrenheit 451 , Ishiguro ’s premiss … manipulates certain key variable quantity in our domain in guild to arrive at some deeper accuracy .
And Film Journalsays the moving-picture show might actually be better than the book , call it :
an intelligent and deeply felt adaption of a 2005 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro . The Cleveland Plain Dealerwas also middling blown forth , saying :
“ Never Let Me Go ” has the potentiality to become the full - blown , boxwood - of - Kleenex crier of the evenfall … It ’s a compelling , unusual narrative .
Salon.com ’s Andrew O’Hehir praisesthis “ meticulous and devastating ” picture , which “ resembles a Merchant - Ivory disaster about doom lovemaking in a war zone , except that the doomed love call for human guinea pig and the warfare zona is not some tropic zona but the alleged good intentions of medical scientific discipline … Romanek does so many hard things attractively in this movie , which luxuriously deserves the Oscar consideration it will surely find . ”
And now for the more negative and motley followup …
Entertainment Weekly ’s review is in the new issue , but is n’t yet on-line . In a nutshell , Owen Gleiberman says that the moving-picture show has some fine performances , but is dramatically monotonic — the young protagonists are too passive and too accepting of their dismal destiny , and this drains all of the urgency out of the film . The only time the film starts to take off is when two of the characters chase down a rumor that if they can prove they ’re really , truly in dear , they ’ll get a few more years . This minute is hard featured in the trailer , but harmonize to Gleiberman it ’s a rare spark of life-time in an otherwise lifeless film . ( I ’m paraphrasing a fleck here . )

USA Todayhas a capsule reviewin which they call the cinema “ moving — if dull move . ” They say it ’s an “ English boarding school sexual love Triangulum ” with the fore - ordained day of reckoning hanging over the characters . And they say there ’s “ safe material , but the getting around to it takes a while . ”
Toronto ’s CityTV has another capsule reexamination , calling the motion-picture show “ a dreary dramatic event , ” in which “ Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightly also deliver performances as if they were channel function they ’ve play before , and neither convinced me why I should be like about their characters . ”
A similar note comes from Newsweek , which says :
In many respects , Never rent Me Go actually works well on the screen ; visually , it is a beautiful film , and nicely acted … But the motion picture tense against the limitations of its form , with fiber promote and flattened into a plot . … At the death , we ’re say via voice - over the moral of the story : for all their despoiler - related differences , Kathy , Ruth , and the ease are just like us . But in the movie , at least , they ’re not . They are a little too soulless .
And then there ’s Rope Of Silicon , which says :
As beautifully shoot as Never allow Me Go is , and as lyric and gently compelling as it may be , it still feels cold and out of limb ’s range … . Romanek does n’t sow any seeds in this garden , instead he plants full grown flowers which are asked to forthwith blossom as soon as he turns on the camera . The situations and characters he ’s dealing with need far more nurturing and room to pass off than he gives them .
Time Out NY chime in :
Unfortunately , this is another vitrine in which a very ok book has been bare of its richness , leaving only dull Oscar bait in its viewing .
Cinematical praises the film ’s performances , but laments that it feels too sketchy and fragile , and we do n’t really get to jazz any of these characters as well as we should :
Mark Romanek ’s Never Let Me Go reduces Kazuo Ishiguro ’s novel – among the most rightfully acclaim of the last ten years – into a photographic film so achingly pensive , gorgeous , and true that it ’s a disgrace it feels adapted from a forgetful account … while periodically rarified , Never allow Me Go does n’t realise the theatrics of a third enactment that find flimsy where it should be wrenching . What we ’re left with is a gorgeous but deeply thwarting film that regularly tapdance into the obsess tenderness so crucial to Ishiguro ’s writing , but at a scant and transitory 103 minute of arc Never Let Me Go does n’t take the prison term to have you in the first place .
That unfavorable judgment of the picture ’s third number also crops up inthe review from The Film Stage :
The translation [ from page to screenland ] is refined to behold , but much of the character exploitation has been contract out . This results in a crippled third act , in which Romanek was clear aiming for the profound aroused reflection found in the novel … . Never permit Me Go is a bluff film that may plant a few ideas in your nous , but Romanek and Garland never let them fully bloom .
