Located on a lake in Wisconsin , about 90 minutes north of Chicago , Wandawega was first a ban - geological era speakeasy , then a brothel , illicit gambling den , a family resort , and a retreat for Latvian Catholics ( who address it “ Vandavega ” ) before it was purchased by its current owners , David and Tereasa in 2003 .

The lake has fish , the woods have cervid , there ’s balls and bow and rackets in various storage sheds and the blank space even has its own sidecar , but unlike a lot of other finish that compete for the best or the most or whatever , Wandawega ’s activity and equipment are just adequate . Do n’t fare here to shoot champion archery , amount here to pullulate a bowing for the first time with a clustering of people doing the same , and ensure you take a sip of beer between shots . Do n’t occur here to learn advanced canoeing skills , come here to fall out , get wet and laugh at each other .
Accommodations are divided between a lodge , bunkhouse and a fistful of outlying facilities like that trailer and the incredible treehouse . But we ’d remain in one of the tipi or cabin tents . Those offer more privateness , better opinion and more of that outside camping feel that you need if you ’ve ventured all the room out into the woods . They ’re one footstep up from sleeping on the earth in that the interior are flat and dry and roomy , but the crib are so hard you ’ll swear you kip on concrete .
Please do n’t call up that I ’m rally on the situation for all these qualification that fundamentally translate to “ crappy . ” The idea here is put everyone on adequate ground , get people to have fun doing hooey together and do that in a way that ’s accessible and fun , not unmanageable and grievous . Just like summertime camp use to be , but now with strong drink .
