Some of the biggest game studio acquisitions in the industry’s history happened in 2020, withZeniMax Media’s acquisition by Microsoftpunctuating the year. This year is bound to be another filled with big studio pickups, but it appears to be starting off with a smaller one. Italian publisher 505 Games announced it has acquired the Australian studio Infinity Plus Two, perhaps best known for thePuzzle Questfranchise.

Infinity Plus Two is a studio with a long history going back well before the originalPuzzle Quest’s launch, having formed all the way back in 1989. It has gone through some dramatic changes since then, going fully independent in 2003 and makingWarlords 4: Heroes of Etheriafor Ubisoft. Infinity Plus Two, known then as Infinite Interactive, was acquired in 2011 only to once again go independent in 2012. The company officially changed from Infinite Interactive to Infinity Plus Two in 2019.

Infinity Plus Two’s biggest game franchise is thePuzzle Questseries, which is a mix of RPG and match-3 puzzle gameplay published by D3. Since 2007, when the firstPuzzle Questwas released, Infinity Plus Two has put outfour totalPuzzle Questgames, the most recent beingPuzzle Quest: The Legend Returnson Nintendo Switch in 2019. It’s unclear if Infinity Plus Two owns thePuzzle Questrights, or if they’ll stay with D3 after the acquisition.

Infinity Plus Two does have one game with 505 that may have led to the acquisition. In 2014, Infinity Plus Two releasedGems of War, a free-to-play RPG match-3 puzzle game not unlikePuzzle Quest. Suffice to say, it wouldn’t be surprising if moreGems of Warsequels are released following505’s acquisitionof Infinity Plus Two.
