Warning! Spoilers ahead forRick and Mortyseason 8, episode 6.
The post-credits scene ofRick and Mortyseason 8, episode 6 finally explains why the cops never come to the Smith house to investigate.Rick and Morty’s post-credits scenesare usually just a comedic tag adding one last joke, or a callback to an earlier joke, to end the episode on a laugh. But sometimes, they go a lot deeper than that. The post-credits scene of season 7, episode 5, “Unmortricken,” bolstered the episode’s exploration of revenge and the cycle of violence by following Slow Mobius’ widow on her own quest for vengeance, which had an oddly hopeful ending.

Rick and Mortyseason 8, episode 6, “The Curicksous Case of Bethjamin Button,” begins withBeth and Space Bethgrowing disillusioned with their adult lives. While Rick, Morty, Summer, and Jerry visit Earth World — an alien theme park designed to recreate the thrill of the human experience (very poorly) —the Beths use a de-aging pod to go back to their childhood and lead a carefree existence. When the de-aged Beths break into Gene’s house across the street and terrorize him, he tries to call 911, and this leads to the long-awaited explanation of a long-standing mystery.
Gene’s Intercepted 911 Voicemails Explain Why The Cops Never Come To Investigate Rick & Morty’s Antics
Rick Has Been Stopping Gene’s Phone From Reaching The Police
Going all the way back toRick and Mortyseason 1, it’s always been strange that the cops never show up to investigate Rick and Morty’s zany sci-fi antics. When Rick is working on his experiments, there are often strange sounds, flashing lights, and even chemical explosions emanating from his garage. This is all happening in plain sight of the neighbors — Rick usually doesn’t even bother to close the door— so why has no one ever called the cops to come and investigate? “The Curicksous Case of Bethjamin Button” explains why in its post-credits scene.
When young Beth and young Space Beth set fire to Gene’s house, Gene frantically calls 911 with his burnt hands. On Earth World,Rick gets a notification that Gene is trying to contact the authoritiesand steps through a portal back home to deal with it. He gives the firefighters a briefcase full of cash to look the other way and leave their street. In the post-credits scene, it’s revealed that Gene has called 911 every single time Rick has done something bizarre across the street, but Rick has intercepted all of these calls.

Rick sends Gene’s 911 calls to voicemail, so Gene has left a series of increasingly unusual messages that have simply been ignored. In the post-credits scene, we get to hear a handful of these voicemails. He reported a home invasion by a smaller home wearing a ski mask. He reported a talking pigeon asking to see his birth certificate. Eventually, Gene begins to question why 911 has a voicemail service in the first place, so he’s starting to catch on that this isn’t normal.
Gene Might Come Up With A Different Way To Report Rick To The Police
Now that Gene knows Rick has been interfering with his 911 calls, it could spell bad news forRick and Morty’s wacky misadventures. Gene doesn’t know exactly how Rick is preventing him from getting in touch with the cops, but he knows that something fishy is going on, so he might figure out a different way to report him to the police. He could send a fax or an email, orhe could even drive down to the nearest police station to file a report in person.
Rick and Mortyairs new episodes on Adult Swim every Sunday.
It’s likely that this is just a one-off gag andRick and Mortywill never return to this storyline. Gene will go back to being the nosy neighbor and Rick and Morty will go back to getting away with their wild sci-fi exploits. But it would be interesting if this plot point came back somehow.Gene has already become a much bigger characterin the show, so it makes sense that he’s being set up for a bigger storyline.
